INTERNATIONAL: China accuses the United States of ‘mistake’ after US President Joe Biden’s administration invited Taiwan to its "Summit for Democracy" next month. Beijing urges Washington to abide by the “one-China” principle and to stop providing any platform or shelter for Taiwan’s independence forces, amid rising tension with the self-governing island.
China’s foreign ministry’s spokesperson, Zhao Lijian has announced on Wednesday that China firmly opposes to United States inviting Taiwan to its "Summit for Democracy" next month. China declares that there is only one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing all of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. The one-China principle is a universally recognized consensus of international relations. Taiwan has no other status in international law aside from being a part of China.
The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson says that China is urging the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués and stop providing any platform or shelter for Taiwan independence forces. He has added that in providing platforms for Taiwan independence forces, the United States will only make a fool of itself. He stresses that when they play with fire together with Taiwan independence forces, they’ll eventually catch fire.
China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory, and views the island as a renegade province. There are 110 participants on the State Department's invitation list for the virtual summit on 9-10 December, which aims to help stop democratic backsliding and the erosion of rights and freedoms worldwide. The list does not include China or Russia.
